In case you live under a rock – Trump won the Presidential Election last night.
Obviously, this has dominated the headlines and has highlighted the deep division in this country. Many view this result as utter destruction of our country while many view it as the start of a great new beginning.
Loss of Hope. Hope Restored.
One or the other.
I understand the importance of politics and the passion that exist. I encourage everyone to voice their opinion, get involved in the process, and vote!!!!!
However – there is something important we all need to understand. Especially if you are a Christian. If you are not then you keep reading and judge me for my wacky beliefs – however, I’d encourage you to give this some deep, deep, deep thought.
The basis of your existence and the anchor of your hope IS NOT in a political system, candidate, or government. It is/can be in something much GREATER.
Hebrews 12:1-3, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer, and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him, he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”
I’m crazy. I understand that. As I’ve grown older, I’ve learned to accept that in a lot of ways I’m a walking contradiction. I’m a Southern Yankee. I love the Pats, Bruins, Celtics, and Red Sox – but I love Southern College teams more. I’m conservative and liberal. I’m Hot but Cool (lol 😉 ). I’m loud and quiet. The list could continue….
This one time when I was in 2nd grade, I was in Sunday School and was told that as a Christian you should only listen to Christian music. Everyone in class smiled and agreed with the teacher. I raised my hand and politely asked, “Well if that’s true what do you sing at Birthday Parties?” … My parents got asked that I take a break from Sunday School.
That story encapsulates my life.
I get it. I’m a little crazy. I understand that maybe I have some crazy beliefs as well, but just track with me for a second.
IF you are a Christian, you need to take things Jesus said seriously and things his followers wrote about following him.
Things like Hebrews 12 (above) or things like Jesus saying, “Don’t worry” (Matthew 6) or “Don’t be afraid” (Matthew 10), or “You can’t be separated from God” (Romans 8). I could list several more.
We have a foundation of hope that is greater than anything! That means regardless of circumstances. Yes, even presidential circumstances that our hope, our foundation, our anchor is in something greater.
So why why why why have we traded a secure, strong, everlasting, foundation of hope for a trivial, fading, hope in people, government, or politics?
Because we have fixed our eyes on a system, person, or government instead of Jesus.
This is true of both sides.
If your hope is in Trump fixing everything or your hope is destroyed because you think Trump is going to ruin everything.
How little do you think of our God? Do you think he was surprised by any of this? How small are you making God that you think he can’t handle or work things out for good (Romans 8:28)?
Am I saying don’t be upset or happy? Don’t care about politics? NO! I’m saying care and care deeply, but it NEEDS to be secondary to the hope you can have in God.
Cool, so what does this do for me in the real world?
This applies to so much more than politics. It applies to any and all of life’s circumstances. Remember you can be content, no matter what.
Today it impacts you because if you are a follower of Jesus no matter who you voted for you need to know, God’s in control and if your hope is in something else it will fade/disappoint you.
If you don’t follow God or aren’t sure you need to know this. One of the big reason Jesus came to earth was to give us a full and abundant life. That means a life where we are FREE to not worry, fear, or be anxious. Wouldn’t we all like that?
The key to that is a belief that your life both right now and future is secure because of your RESTORED relationship with God. The relationship you broke and don’t deserve Jesus made it possible for you to regain it.
Because of that love, we have the freedom to be secure, hopeful, loving, caring, and joyful. No matter what.
My dream for America as a whole right now is that all of us. Clinton supporters, Trump supporters, and 3rd party supporters all lose hope. I dream that we lose hope in a political system, people, and government.
I pray our hope gets RESTORED. Not in a candidate but in Jesus.
Crazy I know. However, if you fix your eyes on Jesus and not on circumstance – I promise hope, joy, and peace soon follow.
Try it. I dare you.
PS. I’ve included a link, of a sermon by Andy Stanley called Fix Your Eyes. It is one of my favorites because he address this idea head on. I encourage you to check it out
